Spanish fly-by-night
James Fryer is all hot under the collar in anticipation of Carmen – the opera, that is – strutting into Dubai this month.
It’s rare that there is something on for Dubai opera-lovers but this month, they’ll be truly spoilt with one of the world’s most popular operas. Carmen, by French composer Georges Bizet, premiered in Paris in 1875 and, although the tale of Spanish seduction was initially charged as being immoral and superficial, has since been performed by acclaimed artists and well-received in every corner of the globe.
On June 9 it’s Dubai’s turn as artists are jetted over direct from the Big Apple to deliver an acclaimed performance of the passionate story featuring the eponymous Carmen, a beautiful gypsy with a hot temper and knack for driving men mad. The busty lead performer clad in a fiery red dress is sure to raise more than a few temperatures during this not-to-be-missed performance including all the best-known musical pieces.
Carmen: A Night At The Opera, in aid of UNICEF, June 9, Baniyas Ballroom, Grand Hyatt Dubai. Doors open at 7pm for a prompt 7.30pm start. Tickets range from Dhs125 to Dhs295 and are available from Virgin Megastores and www.boxofficeme.com.
